Damn, remeber that show? I still think it is absurdly, off the chart obvious that several, if not all of the songs, are about the difficulties associated with both a blissful/painful addiction and often, difficulties in early recovery. I've never been one to really look into the lives of musicians I admire. Ultra (1997)Yeah, I was not aware of the timing of Gahan's drug problems, but at the same time, I had no idea that he didn't write the lyrics either. Simply assign them to your favorite sampler, tweak the "in-between" notes, and you should have a semi-decent representation of that sound, which btw is "Choir 3" out of the "Voice 2" factory EII disk: (I know today the custom is to simply slap a "C" note in the DAW, but I'm old school in a lot of things, sampling is one of them ) C, Eb, F#, A and so on and on. That said, here, I made a sample set in the usual manner I learned to sample in the late '80s / early '90s. Here's the original keymap of that sound, as you can see, it's a bit all over the (key)map :
#WHAT DEPECHE MODE SONGS DID ALAN WRITE PATCH#
The programmer did an amazing job, and as a result, the patch is still quite realistic today, but the thing is, you really need an Emulator sound output (filters, DA stage) to get the ultimate '80s / Depeche style sound. Where can I get samples of that? That patch uses several "Mv" (Male voice) and "Fv" (Female voice) samples, and actually the way the original programmer laid out the samples on the keyboard map is quite peculiar, with many transpositions not only from down up, but up down as well. To me it sounds more like EII+D-50 (see my earlier post) with a lot of compression and surgical EQ cuts.īeautiful Choir sounds. The character of the M1 sound is quite a bit different. What do you think? No, sorry, I don't think that's it, unless they heavily EQ'd it when it was layered with the EII patch.

I also think the original sound is layered with something else too. I am also not claiming to have any definitive knowledge, but I think that the M1 could very well be in there. In the third four it is the same sound but at a lower volume, so that it fits in better. In the second four, I superimpose my M1 Legacy Edition VSTi, with my own Enjoy the Silence patch. The first four is the original song as a reference. However, I still think there's a good chance that hte M1 was involved in "Enjoy the Silence", so I've made another half-baked audio demo. I actually have an Emulator II, and previously I had an Emax II and you only have to browse the libraries to hear some very familiar sounds from DM.
